The Nepal Maoists with 83 members in Parliament withdrew its support from the 8-month old K P Oli government but how politics will unfold in Nepal with a history of political instability – 26 governments in past as many years–is still uncertain. Soon after the Maoists handed over the letter to the Prime Minister saying, ‘it will be politically inappropriate to continue our support’, Oli said he will think about it.As per the Constitution, a vacancy for the Prime Minister’s post will arise only if Oli resigns or loses the vote of confidence or no-confidence motion by a simple majority. In the transitional Parliament, the Maoists, the third largest group have only 83 members whereas the main opposition and the largest Party Nepali Congress has 207 members. even if the Nepali Congress decides to back Dahal, the coalition will have ten fewer votes than necessary. The Rastriya Prajatantra Party -Nepal, the fourth largest party in the House, has asked Dahal to sort out the issue with Oli and save the ‘nationalist coalition’ that is ruling the country at present. The Madhes-centric parties together with 39 members will be a decisive block in forming the new political permutation and combination but given that Oli and Dahal were party to delivering the constitution on September 20 without addressing the grievances of the Madhesi groups, the latter are unlikely to join the future government, although it is willing to vote out Oli as an act of political revenge.
